Cycle Chic Turns Seven

Seven years ago today, this blog we call Copenhagen Cycle Chic was born. While the Photo That Launched a Million Bicycles was taken, as you probably know, on November 14, 2006, the blog started in June the year after. It's been a wild and glorious ride and we love every minute of it. The testimonials we've recieved through the years are treasures to us, as are all the people we continue to meet around the world who thank us for this blog and the inspiration. Inspiration is, however, a two-way street and we are constantly inspired by the people we meet and photograph.

For no particular reason, here are some recent photos from Luxembourg to celebrate our birthday.

Tokyo Chic Post Card

Spent a weekend in Tokyo. Japan must be the most Photographic country on Earth - and Tokyo cyclists are as Chic as Copenhagen's. Was happy to see that biking continues to grow in Tokyo. Maybe some of the many Danish bike promotions had a little impact after all(?)

Portraits of cyclists: “My son is 6 and I cycle with him in Copenhagen”

“I'm from Copenhagen. I cycle every day to go to work and to take my son to school.”

“Can you remember the first day you were able to ride your bike on your own?”

“No, but I remember the first day I rode my bike to school. I fell just in front of my classmates.”

“How old were you?”

“I was 6 or 7.

My son is 6 and I bike with him in the streets of Copenhagen. I always stay next to him, but he rides his own bike. He learned to cycle very early. He was 3 years old and I can say that he cycles very well. I feel safe when I see him cycling. He knows where to stop, what to look at.”

Saint Petersburg in the Sun

I was in Saint Petersburg last week for a great conference. We went for a bike ride and then spotted these cool locals just rolling around the city in the sun, enjoying a bike ride in style.


St P has a long way to go to be a cool, bicycle-friendly city, but things are getting better.

"I'm from Copenhagen, I cycle every day to my high school. In my class, people leaving far away from the high school don't come by bike. But all the other students do.We bike because we like that. It's refreshing. It wakes me up in the morning.

Cycling is healthy when you cycle at least 20 minutes every day."

"Do you have a favorite route in the city?"
"I like to bike around in parks. I find that very cozy, even romantic."

"We bike to school together every day. I cycle to her apartment every morning to pick up."

Portraits of cyclists: Katja – “I like to get around at my own pace”

"I'm from Copenhagen and I cycle everyday.

I like to listen to my music when I cycle. It's pretty important to me. I like to get around at my own pace. I hate taking the public transportation as there is just too many people.

The funniest memories related to cycling that come to my mind are definitely the ones when I come back home after a party with a friend sitting at the back of my bike."

Wrap up the party!

The cyclists at Gothersgade were sunkissed this particular morning when heading for Kongens Nytorv. But I soon had to leave the streets for Copenhagen Meatpacking District…

The occasion was an end-of-project party for CycleLogistics.

Here is Mikael Cycle Chic (above) spotted through the bushes, in the Copenhagen showroom of Butchers & Bicycles.

And the beer was floating from the beer bike…

Dennis - “I bought this bike on the first day I settled down in Copenhagen”

“I'm from Sweden. I live in Copenhagen since I'm studying architecture here. I love the city. I cycle everyday to get around. I bought this bike on the first day I settled down in Copenhagen.

A few weeks after my bike disappeared. One day, I was getting off the bus when I saw it parked just around the corner. So, I took it back.”

“Do you have a favorite route to cycle through the city?”

“By the water! When the weather is sunny it can happen that I do a quick detour to follow the canals in Christianshavn. Sometimes, I also jump off the bike and walk.

The cyclists are the best thing about this city and being a cyclist make me definitely a part of it.”

“How do you think cycling in the streets of Copenhagen will influence the architect you'll become?”

“It's the best way to go from A to B. So, I'll pay attention to integrate bikes in my projects. I'd say to other cities: look at Copenhagen, how well it works. Just put white stripes on the streets and let the cyclists come.”
