Viking Biking

It's been a dull winter. Finally, however, it started to snow yesterday. The winter city changes with a layer of white. It brightens up and becomes almost cheerful, despite the sub-zero temperatures.

Copenhageners in New York

Our very good friends Ole and Lærke from the company Purpose Makers headed to New York City last week for some work. Being Copenhageners, they immediately acquired bicycles - and from a cool local company, of course. All their transport was done on their bicycles. Here we have Lærke - six months pregnant, by the way, enjoying cycling in the city despite the -15 degree temperature.

A trip to New York is not complete without a photo of an NYPD vehicle parked in the bike lane. It's as New York as a hot dog stand.

A practical bike was necessary when you're riding around going to meetings all week.

Sometimes it was all Copenhagen-esque when riding around.

Sometimes, you're not in Kansas anymore, Toto.

Yes. It's wonderful to use your bike when you go out because you don't have to think about drinking too much or catching the last bus. You always have your bike with you wherever you go. It's so easy to get home.

“Do you remember a happy memory that happen when you were riding your bike?”

“I have so many great memories with my bike! I especially remember when I was younger I used to bike with a friend seating at the back and one seating in the front because not everyone had a bicycle. We had to be creative. It was a lot of fun.

I laugh often when I'm on my bike.

The Pleasing Errors of Simplicty

So you pick up the camera and shoot. Then you realise the kids have been fiddling with it. (They do their own photography when I'm not looking, so it's not strange) Then you realise... hey... that's kinda cool.


It's not the first time - certainly not in the life of a photographer. I have a collection of photography mistakes that ended up cool in the Les erreurs agréables de la simplicité set on my Flicker photostream. The Pleasing Errors of Simplicty, in English. Not just bicycle-related. All manner of oops that ended up cool.

But for the purpose of THIS blog, here are the ones involving a bicycle and a camera with a mind of its own.

Copenhagen This Weekend - aka Mikael Cycle Chic

Let's get some summer vibes today, friend! Repeating Cycle Chic Mikael's two Copenhagen hot spots - good to go also in December...

Mikael Cycle Chic and I met one sunny day in front of Copenhagen Town Hall, to take some photos for our hot new blog collaboration.

Our two blogs - Cycle Chic you already know; regarded as one of the Top 10 fashion blogs in the world by The Guardian - and my CPH BLONDE regarded... aaah ;) having 10.000 monthly readers, are Real Friends now since the day we had a nice glass of wine at the trendy Falernum cafe and bar on Værnedamsvej:

Falernum is a favorite of Mikael. Go there for that great glass of wine and for the atmospheric street life, he suggests.

After our Falernum meeting Mikael brought me safely to the Metro Station in this red bullet vehicle! No pictures please - LOL.

He bicycles all over the town - even to the airport. Oh well, what more to do on a Copenhagen weekend, Mikael?

- Have dinner at Fiskebaren in The Meatpacking District, he says. Oh, and if you spot Mikael at Fiskebaren, alone, he's just spoiling himself - and if he's with a girl, it's probably a date! Tip: Make sure to sit by the bar.

Lieke - “My bike and I have almost the same age”

“I come from Holland. I brought my own bike when I came to Copenhagen.”

“You come from a country where there is a strong bicycle culture. What do you think about the bicycle culture of Copenhagen? What surprised you the most when you arrived here?”

“I think the bicycle culture is pretty much the same. I was surprised by the organization of the intersections. In the Netherlands, all the cars stop and then the bikes can go in all the directions. When my friends come to visit me, I always warn them.

I was also surprised to see a lot of nice brand-new bikes. And finaly, the fact that the cyclists in Copenhagen do not really lock their bikes and they tie them up to nothing. I brought my Dutch lock too.”

“Why did you come with your bike? Does it represent something special for you?”

“It's my old bike. I like spending time to fix it. We have almost the same age. It is just one year older than me.

“You will go back to Holland in a couple of days, what will you bring back from Copenhagen?”

“These very warm gloves! Here, the wind go through the gloves, so you need an other layer of wool inside.”
