When I Dragged Harry To A Bicycle Race - Svajerløb'13

DSC_0414
My friend Harry, a fellow student at the University of Manchester, was in Copenhagen this weekend visiting his girlfriend Helena. Whilst she was at work I thought I'd give it a go convincing him to come along to Svajerløb - the Danish Cargo Bike Championships.
"Hmmm, I don't think bike races are really my thing..."
"Harry, my friend, this is no ordinary bike race!"

liningup
Like I said, this was no ordinary bicycle race. Forget spandex and lightweight carbon-fibre frames and think bow ties and colourful cargo bikes. Participants brought along their rides, mainly Bullitts -the crème de la crème of all cargo bikes, to sweat it out for the prestigious title of being King or Queen of the Cargo Bike Championships.

Everyone lining up at the start line. Mental preparation for the route laid out ahead.

Team Bavaria show how teamwork's done whilst swapping riders during the Cargo Bike Rally Race. Nice outfits guys.

DSC_0317
After the first lap it got harder as participants added heavy loads to their cargo bikes (well, what else were cargo bikes built for?). Carlsberg crate took first priority of course...just a shame it didn't hold any beer!

DSC_0295
Harry seems to be getting into the Svajerløb spirit. Or he's just giving me feedback on the danish hotdog he just had.

The Bullitt. Designed to be the lightest and fastest cargo to speed goods through any city. And former pro-cyclist Brian Holm showed up to participate in the Team Relay, too. As always, Brian is a style icon.

Then it was the women's turn to race! They took on the tyres and crates with style and grace.

Felix, Clo and I were Team Mikael for the day. Look at that determination! No wonder he's still aching today...

Mikael Coolville-Andersen. Taking in 2 silver medals! Who knew he was both Urban Mobility Rockstar and World-class Cargo Athlete? Well done! Tillykke!

cargoking2
No wonder he's remaining champion and King of the Cargos.

Blowing kisses, always a great way to work the crowd.

Congrats! That calls for some bubbly.

DSC_0452
Oi oi, sharing is caring!

DSC_0412
So what did Harry think of the day?
"I loved the fact that it was such a playful atmosphere whilst at the same time keeping a serious element of competition. For instance when that one driver began to cycle round super slow to the point when it had the whole Danish crowd laughing at the sheer ridiculousness. I thought the Bullitt was the best of the bunch. I liked that they rage in colours and this cargo bicycle was quite clearly the fastest. The greatest use of inner tubes to hold down heavy loads that I've ever seen!"
If you too like the look of the Bullitt check out the Larry Vs Harry website here.

The Real Beauty of Globalisation...Free Hotdogs!

bootcycle2
Ever on your way cycling somewhere in town and suddenly feeling slightly peckish or thirsty? Ah, you kinda don't have time on your hands or you just can't be asked to park and lock up your bike at the nearest Seven Eleven. Well, do not fear for Bootcycle is here!

Founded by design innovator Ashley Boots, an American who's lived and worked in Denmark for the past year, who felt it was time to fuse the best of two different cultures: the Danish bicycle culture with the American fast food culture.

bootcycle3
Ever the multi-tasker, Ashley stumbled upon the idea for a 'bike-thru' whilst cycling towards Frederiksberg gardens on a hot day and wishing for a cold beverage without having to go off route. "I thought it'd be really nice to have somewhere that sold drinks and snacks without a costumer needing to dismount. Almost like a classic McDonald’s drive-thru experience, but for bikers".

bootcycle
Along with her supportive colleagues, Ashley tested the Bootcycle idea by surprising 100 cyclists with a free hot dog while they cruised down Nørrebrogade. The hot dogs were gone within 30 minutes and there was an overwhelmingly positive response. Since then Ashley has begun expanding on the Bootcycle idea and hopes that one day it will become as common as an American drive-thru.

Cycling Mecca Copenhagen Launches its New Cycle Scheme

DSC_0128
Introducing Copenhagen's new initiative Gobike. The new generation of share-bicycles is to be trialled as the 'missing link' in the Danish public transport system.

The share scheme is open to tourists, companies and citizens but mainly targets on those coming into the city from the suburbs.

DSC_0026
The bicycle itself has an integrated touch-screen with navigational routes and a locking system. Apps on any android phone will allow the bicycle to be reserved and whilst on the bicycle you can even buy train tickets. The design behind the share bicycle ensures that cycling will remain the most convenient way to commute.

DSC_0151
At the launch there was much hype surrounding the reveal of the new share-bicycle.

DSC_0036
Danish politicians came down to the launch to check out the bike and to have a quick go.

DSC_0060
The bike itself was pretty heavy so it'll be interesting to see whether this will deter citizens from using them on a daily basis. Over at Copenhagenize.com, there is a great deal of scepticism about these bikes.

DSC_0055
Can you just jump on? Well...some bicycles may be reserved by commuters coming into the city but Gobike has GPS on all bicycles and will ensure that there are available bicycles at all docking stations. The idea is that the availability of bicycles at your local docking station can be found out via the Gobike App.

DSC_0043
With the integrated technology in this generation of share-bicycles Gobike has designed this share scheme with the aim of becoming a smooth link in the city's public transport.

DSC_0164
Of course we at Cycle Chic couldn't help but sneak this picture in! We're loving the pink pastels and paisley trends at the moment...

DSC_0092
Yes, they have indeed thought of everything...there's place to hold your briefcase and your infant! It shall be interesting to see whether these features will attract citizens to make use of them.

The Gobike. Coming to a docking station near you. (Next Spring...)
