Half-Light November

What a dismal spot of news last night. I heard that the record for fewest hours of sunshine in Denmark, in November, is 11 hours. The average for the month is 54 hours of sunshine.

So far this November we've had... three. Three lousy hours of sunshine.

Just ain't fair.

Mini-tastic

Copenhagener on a vintage mini-bicycle. The preferred ride of the young and fabulous this year. The garages of summer houses all across the region have been trashed in the search for grandma/grandpas old mini-bicycles from the 1950's and 1960's.

A chosen few have acquired one.

Thursday 5 PM

On my way home I made a stop on one of my favorite bridges. My keeper rate when shooting in the dark is horrendous, but when they are good the results can be quite striking.

The Cycle Chic Radar is filled with elegant blips these days and one of the biggest flashing dots is Toronto's 416 Cycle Style.

As velotographer 'Xander, the brains and style guru behind the website describes it:
"From the multicultural flavored, and kaleidoscope styled streets of the 416 in TORONTO, we span the neighborhoods and asphalt in search of new aromas and combinations of visual and edible delights. Armed with a crank and a camera we search. Freezing moments in time of the familliar strangers sharing space and riding by."



Even hard to impress Treehugger is begrudgingly impressed.

Gone Already...

It feels like ages ago, but my calendar tells me that september is only two months away.

We tend to curse this rapid change of season, but perhaps there is something deep inside us, that knows that this is how it should be. I don´t know.

Berlin - Die Mauer ist weg!

Twenty years today I was out surfing. The waves weren't particularly thrilling that day. I was living in Gold Coast, Australia at the time. The only reason I can remember what I was doing that day and can remember crappy swells is because when I returned to the youth hostel I was living at, a German couple - friends of mine - were glued to the television and signalled for me to hurry over and sit down.

The Berlin Wall had fallen and the streets of the city were filled with people witnessing this monumental event.

We sat in front of the television, sipping beer and talking in low, reverent tones as the images unfolded before us. Wishing we were there but hypnotised by witnessing it on BBC World.



A few photos of Berlin Cycle Chic are hardly monumental enough to match that day 20 years ago, but it's my own humble way of saluting the city.

Life in a Cloud

A heating pipe of some sort had burst under City Hall Square, sending great billowing clouds of steam into the freezing air. It was like living in a cloud.

Cinematic Sunday

I was thinking the other day about how to capture, photographically, the afternoon light on a cloudy Nordic day in winter. That strange, labourious light that slowly suffocates the day.

The temperature here is about 4 C. With the wind chill we're pushing -10 C.

It's a Friday afternoon and the streets are filled with life, despite the best efforts of the encroaching darkness.

Winter can do nothing to stem the desire of homo sapiens to converse.
