Portraits of cyclists - “Cycling to work every day, you get use to it very fast and you get to love it too”

20km on high heels

I live in Copenhagen. I cycle every day 10km to go to work and 10km to come back.”

Why?”
Because it's faster and easier than taking the car or the public transports. It's a good way to be active.”

“With these shoes?”
Yes.”

What is your favorite route in the city?”
I change my route sometimes. If I do a detour, I like going through the city, to see all the people and for the specific atmosphere of this part of the city.”

What would be your advice for the women who wouldn't dare to cycle 20km to work?”
It's a matter of habits. You get use to it very fast and you get to love it too.”

Dennis - “I bought this bike on the first day I settled down in Copenhagen”

Denis

I'm from Sweden. I live in Copenhagen since I'm studying architecture here. I love the city. I cycle everyday to get around. I bought this bike on the first day I settled down in Copenhagen.
A few weeks after my bike disappeared. One day, I was getting off the bus when I saw it parked just around the corner. So, I took it back.”

Do you have a favorite route to cycle through the city?”
By the water! When the weather is sunny it can happen that I do a quick detour to follow the canals in Christianshavn. Sometimes, I also jump off the bike and walk.
The cyclists are the best thing about this city and being a cyclist make me definitely a part of it.”

How do you think cycling in the streets of Copenhagen will influence the architect you'll become?”
It's the best way to go from A to B. So, I'll pay attention to integrate bikes in my projects. I'd say to other cities: look at Copenhagen, how well it works. Just put white stripes on the streets and let the cyclists come.”

« I'm from Norway. In Copenhagen, I use my bike every day which I did not do in Norway».

« Do you have something to say to women who read the blog from abroad ? »

«You can all cycle, wear the clothes you want, even cycle in high hills. It's just a matter of practice. Don't forget to put a big basket in front of your bicycle to carry your handbag.»

Portraits of cyclists: Green shoes woman - “I like to ride through Amagerfælled”

Green shoes woman

I bike every day. I go to work by bike.
My bicycle belonged to my neighbor who wanted to throw it away. I took it and my ex-husband fixed it.”

Do you have a favorite route to bike within Copenhagen?”
Yes, I like very much the road where you ride through Amagerfælled, which is not really a road.
Amagerfælled is a very nice area. I like this route because when you drive there at night, there is no street lights, it's totally dark. In a way you are in the middle of the city but it's completely dark.”

Going About Their Business

The world championships for road racing are being hosted in Copenhagen this week. Which means the inner city roads are blocked off to vehicles, which also means there are more people taking their bike this week. A few of us from Cycle Chic headed in to catch a glimpse of the race action. What really caught our fancy though, were the slightly less speedy people on their rush hour commute.
