Its Raining! – Its Pouring!

Rain is a fact of life when you are cycling in Denmark. This year has already seen its fair share of downpour – and then some.

But even heavy rain can be braved in style.




Some have proper rain clothes.



Others brave the elements.



Which reminds me that I was once asked in Japan what we would do if it started to rain during a cycle promotion I helped organize: “We get wet!”.

True fact: Copenhagen skies mostly hold their rainy breath back during the morning and afternoon rush hours. However, I'm not sure all Copenhagen Cyclists would agree with the stats. And with all the rain we get you can - and will - be caught out from time to time. Above: Soaked to the skin. Below: Prepared for the worst.

Enter the Headwind

There's a storm warning for Copenhagen and parts of Denmark today. Here's a little prequel. While many parts of Denmark are hilly, the central area of Copenhagen is rather flat. What many people don't understand is that wind is a major factor. On a windy day, cycling into a headwind, it is equal to cycling up a hill with a 6% grade. And hills end. Wind doesn't.

Today, the storm strength winds will transform Copenhagen into the Pyranees. We will, however, just get on with it.















It's nothing new, of course. Wind has always been a factor in Copenhagen, as the vintage photo, above, attests.

Make sure your bike is not free-standing today, unless you have a proper kickstand.

Some people are more prepared for the wind than others.

Rain and Six-Inch Heels. Problem?

As a true Cycle Chic photographer/blogger, one must learn the art of cycling whilst taking half-decent photographs. I can tell you it was not easy! But when two young Copenhageners rode past in six inch heels in the heavy rain - I simply had to whip out the camera and take some snaps from behind. Not creepy at all. Question is, could you manage the art of cycling sky high?

Heels and rain? Bring it on.

Before I out it, I just want to put it out there that I'm totally just talkin' the talk but not cyclin' th-...no forget it. I personally cannot cycle in even four-inch heels. I have tried and failed. I mean, what's another few inches to the long-legged Danes anyway - they've had years to practice, right? That is my defence.

Caught in the Rain? Pedal faster!

Okay weird August weather: if ya gonna rain, then commit! None of these odd spells where it's full on for five minutes and then dry for another twenty...you're catching out our Copenhageners! I mean what are we meant to wear? Geez...

This Copenhagen Rasta is keeping dry, for now...

Yes, getting wet's no fun...but cheer up, at least your mod-inspired outfit looks great!

Okay, so what if it begins to rain. Wear your favourite outfit and just work the 'wet-hair' look? Hmmm...nah, forget it. Bring that umbrella!

Drizzle & Frizzle

It rains often, but seldom hard in Denmark. So many people just try to ignore the fact and whiz off through the drops.




In summer a double layer can quickly make you as wet inside as outside!



Wool and knitware goes a long way, if the rain is not too persistent.

It catches you unaware sometimes. But ride on.

Or carry a rain jacket in your basket.

Or don't.

Or do.

Oh, nevermind.

Whatever you do, be it ducking for cover to wait it out, riding in it or being prepared for it... just ride.

Rain Reign

We've been lucky this late-autumn. Not so much rain to speak of. But there have been days where the skies opened.
