Copenhagen Party Time
Party time is cycle time in Copenhagen. No reason to take the car when you are destined for a romantic dinner or nightclubbing - or both! Above: Silver hot pants for an evening urban picnic. Below: Just one more Selfie with that gorgeous 70's jump suit.
Greta Garbo look with fiery locks.
Classical and practical elegance on the move.
Never too late to impress!
Happy Cycling!

Cycle Chic ® Goes to Vancouver
So, I was in Vancouver last week. Did at talk at Simon Fraser University. Did a bunch of radio interviews, among them one for CBCs The Current. And then I attended the brilliant Cycle Chic Social party hosted by our friends at Vancouver Cycle Chic. That's VCC's David, above, with his girlfriend Victoria, as we head home one evening.
I also wandered/cycled around a city I know well and a city that I used to live in. Here are some of the things I saw.
One of the days was Canada Day so there was Canadiana all over the place. The gentleman, above left, is about as Canadian as you can get.
All in all, Cycle Chic is not a foreign concept to Vancouverites.

Costa Brava Cycle Chic Party
This time tomorrow I'll be attending a Cycle Chic party on the Costa Brave, north of Barcelona. Looking forward to it! Txell, from Barcelona Cycle Chic, is arranging it and it's going to be fun. Pop by if you're in the neighbourhood.
Probably just as fun as the last time Cycle Chic rocked Barcelona... if not more.

Bike Shop Street Party in Copenhagen
You should never judge a party by it's beginnings. The latest Larry vs Harry street party didn't start well for me. Hungover from the night before, I needed to eat some nuggets and a McFeast in order to get rolling again. That's how hungover I was. As a result, the King of Cycle Chic was completely out of service and missed what could have been the Cycle Chic Epic shot of the century. See above. Am I losing my touch?
Things managed to improve, however. Larry vs Harry have started a tradition of hanging out on the sidewalk or in the shop and letting things develop from there. Beers and pizza and loads of banter. Every couple of months or so. For no reason or a good reason. In this case, Ole - on the right - was heading to Sweden after a summer in Copenhagen. He's Norwegian... oh nevermind. It was a good excuse, trust me. It started out casually one Saturday afternoon. Some of the owners of shops on the same block showed up. Beers were bought and off it went.
You never know how it's going to go, these parties. The shop is on the busiest bicycle street in the Western world, so loads of people we know are sure to ride past, stop up, drink a beer, head off again. The numbers ebbed and flowed through the evening. Parties should be organic and this one was.
People came, hung, went. Some stuck around. I think we had the pleasure of entertaining a dozen nationalities. Gin and tonics were bought, along with vodka and red bull. Pizzas were consumed.
The guy who bought my old Bullitt rode past and a Serbian girl hung out.
These two friends were heading off into town and we gave them a beer and a lighter to help them on their way.
More people showed up and it got cosier. The tire was punctured on this woman's Christiania bike so we - okay, Ole - fixed it for her. This girl on the right had a girlfriend on a leash and was asking for directions to where she could catch a number 40 bus. We helped her out (and regret to this day not going to that party...)
We started in the mid-afternoon and went quite late. People who stopped by for a beer earlier, before heading off to dinner, were soon riding home again.
Even the Danish Bicycle Ambassador got in on the act, inflating this girl's tires for her. At some point we ordered mojitos and daquiris from the bar down the street.
Some of the most fun people left way too early but we soldiered on. Later we ended up at a badasse street party, where I took these photos in this earlier post.
Thank goodness Larry and Harry don't have these parties every weekend, but we're all looking forward to the next one.

Copenhagen Pisserenden
Summer Saturday night in Copenhagen. I'm still recovering from it as I write this on the Tuesday after. :-) The night air was balmy, the Gay Pride parade had rocked its way through the city all day and this Saturday night was really kicking off. These photos were taken in the Latin Quarter on a street nicknamed Pisserenden or The Pissing Gutter. A name that dates centuries back in time.
People were just sitting around drinking on curbs or - like me and my friends - on a doorstep, enjoying the night. Others were waiting for friends before heading on to other hotspots. It was still early, about midnight. This intersection seems to act as a magnet where people wait and gather before moving on.
Not surprisingly, bicycles abound. It's as though they multiply like rabbits after dark on weekends - see this previous post from the meat packing district - and take over the city. As only 40% of Copenhageners own cars and all the surburbanites are long departed to the urban sprawl, this city at night is a treat. Virtually a car-free city.
Groups of friends move about the liveable city. Coming and going.
Gathering, chatting, moving on.
Discussing, laughing, enjoying.
The night is filled with choices. Thinking about which one to make takes a moment or two.

Football And Bicycles
Yes, yes... we know Denmark crashed out of the World Cup. Sigh. Nevertheless, when we do play in the big tournaments, we get right into the mood, like anywhere else. Here's some shots from the last match against Japan, taken on and around the City Hall Square where thousands watched the matches. The shot above was taken after the match, when Copenhageners headed out into the city for a night out.
This was taken before the match. Heading off somewhere to watch it with friends.
Another Copenhagener heading home - or out on the town - after the match.
After the match the tricky bit can be finding your bicycle. When more than 20,000 people converge on the City Hall Square - most of them on bicycles - good luck! This girl got away early.
As did this one.
But this girl was looking around all the bike racks for hers. She found it eventually.
