Break Out The Gloves

Elegance on Wheels
As we ease into winter through the transition of autumn here in Copenhagen, we're in the midst of another transitional in mainstream bicycle culture. We love to see all the lovely hats and scarves and gloves come out.

Gloves are one thing that always trigger a one or two week period where we start to realise that it may be time to break them out. We all know it well here. You head off one morning and realise it's damn chilly but your gloves are packed away somewhere in your home. You make a mental note to yourself to dig them out. You forget. Next chilly day, another mental note.

Springtime Glove Removal

Eventually, you find them and put them by the door. Then you forget to take them when you leave. You finally remember to take them with you, and put them on. In the afternoon, however, heading home or onwards into the evening, they're in your bag or your pockets. Then the chill catches you unawares once again. You'll ride along, fishing them out of your pocket or dig them out at a red light, like the photo above, and put them. Unless of course you just think... "I don't have far to go... I'll suck it up."

Shoulder Check
After this seasonal transitional phase (the exact opposite is true in the spring), your gloves become second nature. They're rarely forgotten and keep your fingers warm until the spring launches its Occupy Winter rallies in March and April.

Red Glove
We felt like showing a little series of red gloves from Copenhagen but whatever the colour or fabric or style, the bike lanes of Copenhagen will soon be coloured with them.

Early Morning Moods

Casual
Early morning Copenhagen. 8 AM. There are few things that appeal to me more than someone riding a bicycle casually with one hand. It aptly sums up our slogan Style Over Speed, as well as the philosophy of the Slow Bicycle Movement.
Window Shopping
And there is always time for window shopping at the red light.

Bikeautiful Boys

Velomama simply adores these cycle chic fellas and the very discrete emphasis on bicycles...
Now whoever tells me cycling is not elegant, I have nothing more to say.

Tasting Our Own Medicine

Last week, I was out shooting for this blog when I suddenly noticed a cool guy rushing past on a splendid bike. I hurried to get a pic of him and then it struck me - I recognized him! You might too... Now normally he's the one spotting others and blogging about it, but I got away with taking a pic of Mr Meta Dapper himself without being noticed.

Oriental Cycle Chic

After two months in Malaysia working for the Danish version of 'Expedition Robinson' ('Survivor' in the US), I (Marie) am glad to be back 'n' blogging!

Like many other Asian countries, Malaysia is full of cars everywhere, and urban infrastructure is a nightmare. But on the little island of Besar where the production crew was located, bikes were crucial to get around. All kinds of small errands were done by bike, and if you met someone you knew on the way, you just hopped off and joined them by foot.
Maybe it wasn't a coincidence that this year's crews were from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Holland and Belgium - countries with a considerable tradition of cycle chic?

To illustrate, here are two prop girls carrying a sewing machine and an ironing board while chatting gently in the sun.

The carpenters were eager cyclists, always heading somewhere with cases of skulls or coconut leaves on their back racks.

I only spotted a few Malaysians on bikes. However, these muslim chicks in the small harbour town of Mersing seemed to enjoy themselves..

Handy Dandy

One of the more subtle details of the casualness of Copenhagen bike culture is one that I never noticed until recently.
Elegance on Wheels *
The sight of a cyclist riding with one hand is truly a sign that urban cycling is relaxing and refreshing. You're at ease on the bike lanes, separated from the traffic. Your only concern is maintaining a comfortable momentum on your way to wherever it is you are going.
One Finger Riding*
One finger riding is even better.
