City Cycling Europe Guides by Rapha

The first thing you notice about the Rapha City Cycling guides is that they look good. Even the little box they come snugly ensconced in is pretty. They are a series of bright pastel colours and feature a different illustrator for each city, so each one has an air of distinctiveness whilst also fitting nicely into the set.
There are eight guides, taking in nine cities in Europe, most of them good for citizen cyclists: Copenhagen, Paris, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Milan and Antwerp & Ghent sharing one guide. They are initially only available as a full set of eight and feel a little like extended blogs, in that they give you little snapshots of local knowledge – they don’t concentrate on well-known tourist spots, indeed they barely mention them. Instead they give the low down on the latest hip places to hang out.

They contain maps for nice cycling routes, which is handy for anyone trying to get from A to B. But there are also sections on ‘racing and training’ that seem to be aimed at the lycra-wearing market, rather than chic citizen cyclists. Of course in an ideal world, ‘city cycling’ guides wouldn’t be a thing, there would just be city guides.

The recommendations for what to do in Copenhagen are a fairly solid spread of decent bars, restaurants and shops, though of course the nature of cities is that they are always going to miss something out. And the danger is that being enshrined in the permanency of ink they will soon get out of date. One solution to this is of course making sure you get on your bike and get visiting all these cities as soon as possible, and these attractive-looking guides certainly make visiting enticing.

Corneliani's theme for this season - The Great Gatsby - highlights a style which is increasingly relaxed, confident and unstructured while still observing tradition. A well paired combination of elegance and personal style that is also very present in Copenhagen.

Cycle Chic Approves: Orco Cicli Bicycles

Oh dear. Yet another bicycle that makes us weak in the knees here at Cycle Chic. And goodness me, another Italian make. This affair has got to stop. Meet the much too fine bicycles from Orco Cicli, out of Milano. Above is the Preta Donna, that cheeky vixen.

From Orco Cicli's website:
We don’t make bikes in series, we make them by hand one at a time: the measurements, the colour, the accessories and components can all be changed. What remains the same, is the geometry of the frames, the passion and care with which they are made and our trademark discreetly placed on the stem and on the rear case that holds the bike’s worksheet: you can remove it and use the case as a cigarette paper or business card holder.

How cool is that?! A little case holding the bike's worksheet but that can be used to hold rolling paper or business cards!

Anyway, back to business. If The Preta Donna is a cheeky vixen, then god knows what the Nilde Donna gets up to after dark. I shudder excitedly just thinking about it.

The boys are just as precocious, it would appear. The Amadeo Uomo, for example. Thank goodnes Orco Cicli only have five base models to choose from otherwise I'd go quite mad.

Oh, and lovely bicycle bell. Well, I thought it was a bell, but it's a gear shifter thingy.

Here's a film about the three chaps who started the company. It's in Italian, which is lovely to listen to even if you don't parlo.

Orco Cicli are based in Milano.

Cicloeleganza in Milano

Cicloeleganza in Milano - Copenhagen Cycle Chic
Our intrepid - and frightfully fashionable fashionista - friend Raquel from Madrid was on the Cycle Chic beat in Milano recently, recording a series of cicloeleganza shots for us here at the blog.
Milano Cycle Chic
A splendid series of shots of citizens enjoying a cycling life in the Italian city. Cyclists who are clearly feel safe and secure and who know that taking it easy is the safest way to ride.

Encroaching Darkness

Moment of Clarity
The days are getter shorter and cooler. Today the day is 7 hours and 5 minutes shorter than on the summer solstice - 21 June. No wonder Danes buy more candles than any other nation. Keeping the winter evenings and nights cosy.

Despite the fading light, the bicycles continue to roll. Like the Copenhagener above. She just commenced off the light. Hasn't rolled more than 5 cm. but she is in motion.
Gesticulation
The short winter days make the appearance of brilliant sunshine all the more spectacular, especially when riding to work in the morning. You cherish it.

Milano
Been a while since The Sartorialist has posted a bicycle shot but here's a fresh one from Milano.
