Winter Ride

Viking Biking_22
Some more Viking Biking. This is my route to work each day at Copenhagenize Design Co.. Up over Knippels Bridge. 75% of Copenhageners cycle all winter. On all sorts of bikes.
Viking Biking_12
Along Hans Christian Andersen's Boulevard, rush hour looks like this. It's only one light cycle but a bit of snow doesn't stop the bicycles.

Cargo bikes roll on, as well.

Like any other day, I stop at Sweet Treat for coffee before getting to the office. A fantastic little café to visit if you're in town.

Portraits of cyclists: Katja – “I like to get around at my own pace”

Katja

"I'm from Copenhagen and I cycle everyday.
I like to listen to my music when I cycle. It's pretty important to me. I like to get around at my own pace. I hate taking the public transportation as there is just too many people.

The funniest memories related to cycling that come to my mind are definitely the ones when I come back home after a party with a friend sitting at the back of my bike."

What To Drink After #VikingBiking

If you follow either Cycle Chic or Copenhagenize you may have seen the #vikingbiking hashtag on Twitter or Instagram. We were amused to discover that a variation of the hashtag exists as a product. Biking Viking coffee, available online at Ingebretsens.

Uh oh... we just discovered they have chocolate, too.

Middle of August: Copenhageners are back in town

It's still the summer holidays in many countries, but in Copenhagen, children are back to school and inhabitants back to work. We are still looking forward to welcoming hundreds of foreign students who are going to arrive in a few weeks and the city will be ready to start a new university year.

On the bicycle lanes, the atmosphere is back to business, we can see:

  Back in town
Young man drinking coffee before going to work (with socks matching the shirt)

  Back to CPH
Young lady undoing her ponytail after a day at work

Back in town
Time to suit up!

Bicycle Coffee

The boys from Dalla Corte made me a cappucino with a bicycle! Thanks! #tedxzurich #cyclechic http://ingorogalla.ch
I just returned from TEDx Zurich where I was speaking about Bicycle Culture by Design. TEDs are always brilliant, with so many wonderful people to meet and be inspired by.

Here's a little highlight of the day. The boys from Dalla Corte were busy making fantastic coffee for the 550 of us and they were whipping up beautiful designs in the foam.

I asked them if they could do a bicycle and they took me up on the challenge. Beautiful coffee art!

Let There Be Light

Copenhagen Bikehaven by Mellbin 2012 - 3180
The Nordic winter sun leaves us with no more than a low lazy light during most of the day. However the few soft winter rays that reach us allow for beautiful pictures with deep colours if you are lucky enough to have your camera at hand and a little time to shoot.

I especially like it when the suns draw a fine line of light around the subject as to underline that the rider is the main character of the picture.

Even the smallest drop of yellow helps bring a picture to life.
Copenhagen Bikehaven by Mellbin 2011 - 0020

Here the contour is so thin that it barely catches our eyes - but it makes all the difference. And the best part? Riding on a such sunny winter day reminds us that now we can look forward to two summers and only one winter! Copenhagen Bikehaven by Mellbin 2012 - 3111
Happy cycling!

Multitasking

Cool Running
Last weekend was the Copenhagen Marathon, with 12,000 participants running through the car-free, blocked off streets. But while some people were running, others were preoccupied with other activities. Texting, for example.

Copenhagen Lego Cycle Chic

Citizen Cyclists 001
If we lived in Toy-penhagen, this is what this blog would look like. Citizen Cyclists riding through the city.
Citizen Cyclists 006
Man in a suit complete with mobile. Supermum with her kid and her coffee. Flowers decorating a bike.
Citizen Cyclists 012
The elderly (with baguettes), a doctor, you name it.
Citizen Cyclists 010
Businessman with briefcase. 50% + female ridership. Etc.
Citizen Cyclists 004
One-handed riding. Yep... it's all there. All we need is for LEGO to make stilettos and mini-skirts... :-)
