Red Raleigh Chopper in Three Cities

Just spotted a theme, after perusing the recent red bicycle photos from the bloggers of the Cycle Chic Republic. The red Chopper from Raleigh, like this one spotted in Barcelona last summer.

Raleigh produced them in the 1970's and then stopped for whatever reason. Back then there was a gear shift on the crossbar which was potentially unlucky for male cyclists. When they relaunched the design in the early 2000s, the gear shift was moved up to the handlebar, but the bicycle was largely the same. Most bikes when I was a kid looked like this. Banana seat, back rest. Cool.

Then when our friends at Cardiff Cycle Chic posted this photo of the same bike, I realised that I had a tri-city theme goin' down.

'Cause my main man, Felix, has one, too here in Copenhagen.

Phone Shot

I was looking around my smartphone from HTC yesterday and saw in the gallery a number of photos that come with the phone to be used as a background. This shot was among them. Not bad. A little bit of smartphone cycle chic. Nice one, HTC.

Malmö / Lund Cycle Chic

It's about time, really. Olaf has just launched Malmö/Lund Cycle Chic and we're loving it. Malmö is Sweden's third largest city and it's a mere 30 minutes from Copenhagen by train. Lund is just a bit farther north. It is these two cities that cycle the most in Sweden, inspired by their close proximity to Copenhagen. Both rank high on Copenhagenize's Most Bicycle-Friendly Cities list. Malmö has about 30% trips by bike and Lund is at 43%.

I stopped in Lund the other day, on my way to a canoe trip on a Swedish river, and it was spectacular to see how many bicycles there were on the streets.

So... let's hear it for Malmö/Lund Cycle Chic. Welcome on board.

St. Petersburg Cycle Chic

Just returned from a killer weekend in Saint Petersburg. Goodness me, that is a city that knows how to party.

I was invited by the Royal Danish Consulate General for the opening of the Dreams on Wheels exhibition. This is the first of a series of three or four posts about St. Petersburg Cycle Chic.

These shots are from the streets of the city, showing the blossoming bicycle culture. Dottie, from Let's Go Ride a Bike, let me know that Trisha was there last year and we were interested to see if there is an increase in the number of bicycles in the city.

By all accounts, things are heading in the right direction. And then some.

I saw many more bikes than I was expecting and certainly more upright bikes than I would have hoped. Choppers and BMX's are quite popular in Russia and the mountain bike, dwindling in numbers among urban cyclists in the rest of the world, lives on in Eastern European and Russian cities. Simply because there is a lack of choice at bike shops, from what the locals tell me in every city in the region.

There is no bicycle infrastructure to speak of. I certainly never saw any on the streets. There were many bicycles in the traffic and many rolled casually along the sidewalks at a pedestrian pace.
