Shinola - Iconic Bicycle Brand from Detroit settled down in the City of Angels

DSC_0125
Clotilde, Head of Copenhagenize France, was in Venice (CA, USA) a few weeks ago to discover what Los Angeles and Santa Monica have to offer in terms of public spaces and bicycle infrastructure. Outcome : quite a lot actually!

But first, let's focus on a unique street, which is gradually turning into the Mecca of stylish urban cycling: Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Three years ago, only Linus Bike (Dutch inspired bicycles) has a store on this hip street. Now, Shinola, and cycling accessories brands, like Rapha and Timbuk2 are well established.

Shinola is a stylish brand from Detroit (MI), producing bikes, watches, and leather bags. It's obviously a brand which wants to promote the American industrial know-how and put it back at the forefront.

Clotilde has test-driven the Women's Detroit Arrow, a black & white qualitative single-speed bike, with leather saddle and cork grips. It was also the opportunity to realise a photo shooting with a Cycle Chic touch and palm trees in the background.

Bye the way, the city of Detroit, is the birthplace of American automotive industry. But "Motor City" is living a real shift and politicians have the will to offer to their inhabitants all the modern urban mobility solutions including cycling.

Cycle Chic Sunday

Navy & White
It's Sunday, late-morning in Copenhagen. It's cloudy and windy outside my windows. There's a thought, however, that appeals. In a few hours, the sun will rise over California. Far away across an ocean and a continent.

me & my bike
Later today, Eva - from Cycle Chic Sundays in Long Beach- will probably be walking out of her house to wherever her bicycle is parked. She'll pedal off to meet some friends. She'll hook up with them and they'll embark on something so simple and elegant.

A Cycle Chic bikeride.
Cycle Chic Sunday's
She'll round up her bike gang and enjoy the freedom of cycling calmly, stylishly and aesthetically around her town.

Looking out my windows again, with raindrops starting to fall, I just realised where I'd rather be.

We Love Sacramento Cycle Chic!

There are loads of cycle chic blogs out there these days and some are closer to our hearts (you all know who you are!). Meet Sacramento Cycle Chic.

If you're in Sacramento, California this Saturday, May 8th 2010, then be sure to check out their fashion show. The two ladies in the photo are the ones putting on the gig, so you KNOW it can't go wrong! They understand Cycle Chic and combining it with vintage is brilliant.

Have a great party, Lorena, Ed and friends!

Cycle Chic and Friends in San Francisco

I've blogged a bit about my recent visit to San Francisco and declared my bike love for my friends 'over there'. Adrienne, Kristin and Meli.

I also blogged photos from the Halloween Critical Mass here, here, here and here.

The little film above is about a bike ride we went on the day after Critical Mass. Just riding around the city and hanging out and having a good time. Like the lyrics suggest, I'm a lucky man.

Coolest Bike Parking in the World

Biomega at W Hotel SF 01
I've not seen such cool bike parking in ages. At my hotel in San Francisco - the W Hotel - they have three Danish Biomega bicycles for guests to use free. Okay, three isn't much, but it's what they do with them that counts.
Biomega at W Hotel SF 02
It's like a museum the way they hang them up on the wall like that. You ask the valet for a bicycle and he walks over with a crank and proceeds to lower - slowly and cerimoniously - the bicycle to the ground. Now THAT is style over speed!

Mikael and the Biomega
I rode the bicycle during the Halloween Critical Mass and the next day, too, with some friends. A one-speed on the hills of San Francisco. Easy peasy. Photo by Kristin somewhere on Valencia.

Here's what other bikes I've been riding whilst travelling.

Lego Girl in Frisco

SF CM Legogirl 01
Heading down Market Street towards the meeting point for San Francisco's Halloween Critical Mass I spotted Lego. I suppose a Swede would be able to see meatballs at 5 km and a Norwegian could probably smell whale meat at 10, but a Copenhagener spots Lego. [and high heels on pedals at 40 km...]

This San Francisciana had made her own accessories out of colourful Danish bricks and we chatted about it as we rode. I told her I needed some photos and she obliged.
SF CM Legogirl 03
She asked if Lego had a slogan, which they don't, really. But I explained the the name Lego is an abbreviation of 'lege godt' - play well. And that later the founder discovered that Lego was loosely interpreted in Latin as 'I assemble' or "I put together". Which was nice.

She was decked out in Lego accessories and even had a Lego blouse in her bag. Very funkalicious, indeed.
SF CM Legogirl 02
A mid-Atlantic compromise: Lego and heeled boots meets American toe clips and no chainguard.

SF CM 09 Late
Continuing the Lego theme, I spotted this chap - on the left - with a Lego mini-figure head rolling down Valencia.

For the record, it's not correct to call them 'legos'. It's just Lego. Like rice. You don't say "I'm going to boil some rices for dinner." There. Got THAT off my chest.

Cycle Chic Wedding Days

Thanks to Raquel in Madrid for the link to these lovely wedding photos from California. Thanks to our intrepid correspondent Raquel from Gratis Total.

And to Ellen from Governors Island in New York for these lovely shots. Note the arrows on the pavement... they are side by side, making it clear that cycling with a friend is more than welcome. One of Ellen's own ideas for helping bicycle culture blossom on Governors Island. A little extra paint but a lot of positive symbolism.

Here's the bride heading over the Brooklyn Bridge.

You can read more about Governors Island - and plan your imminent visit - on the Island's blog right here. There are loads of bicycle friendly activities on the island.

Ode To A Bicycling America

What I wore annnnd ze new bicyclette!
Atlanta, Georgia - by San Smith - check out her blog!

The very, very best thing about this blog - and the other one - is the people we've met. It's a pleasure to cybermeet like-minded individuals who share our love of personal style, fashion and bicycles. In that order.
Birthday Date
Santa Monica, California - by Madness Riviera.
We get so many lovely guest photos sent in or added to our Flickr group so why just chuck a little montage up with photos from a few of our American friends.

Fashion-wise there will always be differences in style on both sides of the pond, but we're loving what our friends and acquaintences are doing for Bicycle Chic in America.

Venice Beach, California
I lived in L.A. for a while back in the late-80's and every weekend was spent either surfing or hanging at the beach. Venice Beach was a favourite spot. Even back then Venice Beach was bicycle heaven. Some good things never change.

La la
You know cycling has arrived [or rather returned] when the citizens of big cities get into the saddle. First Paris and now New York. Sure, it is far from perfect, but it's happening. And when it happens in cities like Paris and New York, it will spread. Wonderful.
Read our series about Paris for more info about the rebirth of their bike culture.

Thanks for all the photos. There are so many more and we'll keep posting the, but for now this is our Ode to a Bicycling America.
