Rio de Janeiro Bike Share

Just got home from some Cycle Chic related activities in Rio de Janeiro. The city has recently launched a bike share system and it's a massive success. 50,000 subscribers, which is brilliant in a city that is already lightyears ahead of most cities in the Americas regarding reestablishing the bicycle on the urban landscape.

No surprise that Rio came in at #18 on the Copenhagenize Index list of Bicycle Friendly Cities last year.

Many of these photos were taken on a Sunday, when the bike lanes along the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches get a whole lot wider what with the three lanes of traffic that are closed to cars and opened to bicycles, skateboarders, rollerbladers and people just walking casually along.

The system was so busy that there was a queue at many stations as people waited for bikes to be rented so that other bikes could be parked.

There are, however, many people using the bike share bikes during the week for short trips around the city.

When Cycle Chic can't make it to the Burning Man festival, we send family members to experience it for us.

My little brother was on holiday in Costa Rica recently. He sent us a pleasant collection of photos from the seaside town where he was staying. A place that is no stranger to the bicycle. And a place where beach cruisers are actually used on the beach. :-) 
 

Summer Somewhere Else

It ain't summer here in Copenhagen. But it is, apparently, quite a lot of summer on Burleigh Beach in Gold Coast, Australia. Bastards.

Climate Change - Australia Cycle Chic

Climate Change is a serious issue. It can also be quite depressing. When the climate changes to winter here in Copenhagen, it's changing to summer Down Under. Lucy from Sydney Vintage Bikes sent us these shots from a recent campaign in Sydney. Bondi, to be precise. They were taken by Lara Inc. - Sydney’s most respected fashion and lifestyle events agency and were in conjuction with an event for Switch Flops.

Lucy provided the vintage bikes for the event.

While we wouldn't want to live anywhere else but Copenhagen, we certainly wouldn't mind a little Australian holiday right about now.
