Poetry on Wheels

Poetry on Wheels
Just standing on a street corner talking to a friend and then this Copenhagener rolls up.

Iconic Copenhagen Cycle Chic. Right there. Appearing out of the grey winter mist like a dream.

These iconic shots are not everyday occurances but whether they are iconic or almost so, it's moments like these that are nothing less than the transportational equivalent of standing on a street corner and having Shakespeare walk past, stop up, mumble to himself "'Hmm... a horse... a horse... my kingdom for a horse... yes, that works...". Then he jots down the line in his notebook and walks off. Or John and Paul passing by, one humming a melody and the other trying out lyrics... "How about, 'I Wanna Hold Your Ha-aa-aa-nd'...?" Or Kieslowski eagerly and expressively explaining a plotline to Piesiewicz.

It's instant poetry, created on the spot. Epic to witness. Breathless. Add to that simple aesthetic fact the whole 'most efficient machine ever created' / sustainable / effortless / enjoyable angle ... and my goodness it's nice.

  2. In the birding world such rare occurances would be descibed as 'Mythic','Crippling'and 'Mega'. Congratulations on your accidental date with destiny!

  3. Hello, I am enjoying your wonderful photos from the US Virginia. A question - seems most in CPH do not wear helmets. Is there not a law? Should there be?

  4. @ Anonymous (From Virginia). There is not a law, nor should there be, in my opinion. The majority of severe bicycle accidents would not have been alleviated by the use of a helmet, and too much focus on the dangers of biking can scare people away from it. Better to teach better biking behavior and make biking safer through segregated bike lanes etc.

  5. considering the fact that there isn't one single place in the world where helmets have reduced head injuries, it's safe to say that no... there shouldn't be. that's why there are so few places in the world with helmet laws.

people who promote helmets are not the same people who promote cycling and public health. we prefer the latter.

  6. those little white boots are adorable, and you should know that I hate this blog, because it'll eventually wear me down and convince me to buy an awesome bike that I can't afford, causing me to become homeless and broke

  11. @Anon: The statue is called "Tiberen", the Danish name for the river Tiber that runs through Rome. On the other side of the road is a similar statue called "Nilen". The Danish name for the river Nile.

  13. The "takeaway," as we say in the hamster cage currently called the USA, is that if you provide the right environment, style, happiness, and the joy of being human will erupt right there on the streets!

However, we can't have any of that here, you know. We must continue driving our cars and being in debt, unhappy, and very unstylish...

  14. Very nice! Although you can see the one or the other cyclist in snowy Edmonton, I am waiting for spring, no way of getting on my bike now, unfortunately. And this year I wanna see if they are following up with Montreal's exemple for public bikes, as they promised to do here! Cheers
