Nihola City

Happy to Own a Nihola
A happy Nihola owner. Nihola are one of the most popular brands of cargo bikes here in Copenhagen. In a review of a bike exhibition a decade ago, a newspaper asked "Why doesn't anyone make a lightweight cargo bike for carrying two kids and a case of beer?"

It's a fair question that reflects Copenhagen priorities. Niels Holme Larsen, a mechanical engineer, figured he could do it. The name NiHoLa is taken from the first two letters of his three names. Now you know. And nowadays there are about 5000 Nihola trikes around Copenhagen.

Nihola are setting up shop in Paris and Berlin in January and there are plans in the works for North America.
Three Shades of Red
And they're perfect with heels.

  2. I definitely think the market for a cargo bike like that is growing in the US, particularly in Portland. I'm starting to see more and more of them around (I've even spotted a Christiania), as well as the WorkCycles bakfiets that Clever Cycles sells, and now there is a shop in town selling Flying Pigeon box bikes. I can only imagine that the increasing number of bike shops which sell this type of bike means there is greater demand, which is good. Can you get Velorbis to push more US retailers to sell their bikes now? :D

  3. Bike Gallery is selling Madsens, aren't they? Velorbis is getting in there, don't worry. Shops opening in chicago and NYC.

  5. Yeah, Bike Gallery has Madsens, and then there's Metrofiets, making bakfiets-style bikes here in Portland with customizable boxes and such.

I think it would be great to see both Velorbis and Batavus in Portland (I know Batavus used to sell in the US, but refused to make anything more than a 3-speed, which didn't sell well in the US, so they stopped exporting - a shame). Had I know about Batavus at the time I got my bike, I probably would have gotten that instead of the Electra, but the Electra's been a good bike as well.
